Re-member is an independent non-profit organization on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota which seeks to improve the quality of reservation life through relationships, shared resources, and volunteer services. Volunteers come for one-week (late February to mid-October) and live in one of Re-member’s two dorms. Days are spent doing work projects (roofing, skirting, building outhouses, and other repair projects), touring the Reservation, hearing from native speakers, and de-briefing with Re-member’s staff. Although work projects are important, they are only a part of what Re-member is about; building relationships with the Oglala Lakota people is just as important. Volunteers pay $350. The minimum age of volunteers is 13. A week at Re-member is an amazing, life-changing experience for a young person (and for older people, too!).
